Visakhapatnam: As part of the strategic initiative to explore advanced energy storage solutions tailored for the maritime sector, Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) hosted a high-level delegation from Toshiba Battery Division, Japan, on Tuesday.

The delegation, led by Sato Goro-san, Group Head of Battery Sales and Business Development at Toshiba Japan, Kazutaka Nishimura-san, Director of Toshiba India, and Rakesh Trakru, Sales Incharge of Toshiba India, was accompanied by Maninder Singh of the LWT Group.

The team was warmly received by HSL Director Cmde. Girdeep Singh, who outlined the yard's strategic vision and emphasised its commitment to adopting innovative technologies that align with India's 'Make in India' initiative. Discussions centered on integrating Toshiba’s state-of-the-art Lithium Titanium Oxide (LTO) battery technology, known for its exceptional safety, reliability, and adaptability to demanding marine environments.

The potential business association between HSL, Toshiba, and LWT envisions the development of advanced Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with complete rack integration tailored for India’s maritime needs.Speaking on the occasion, Sato Goro-san remarked that “collaborating with one of India’s most prestigious shipyards is a tremendous opportunity to bring Toshiba’s cutting-edge energy solutions to the Indian maritime sector. We are excited about the prospects of contributing to sustainability and innovation in shipbuilding.”

Echoing this sentiment, Cmde Girdeep Singh added, “we are thrilled to explore Toshiba’s advanced LTO cell technology and, in collaboration with our partner LWT, using Toshiba cells, aim to manufacture complete battery energy storage systems right here in India. This initiative aligns perfectly with our vision under the ‘Make in India’ program, driving self-reliance while delivering world-class solutions."

This initiative marks a pivotal step toward enhancing energy efficiency and sustainability in India’s shipbuilding industry, reinforcing HSL’s position as a pioneer in adopting cutting-edge technologies for the next generation of maritime operations.
